In today’s blog entry, Seth Godin said something that really struck a chord with me. “Our access to ideas is being held hostage by big companies who are dependent on the status quo.”
Amen to that—especially in today’s Christian media industry. The system, as we know it, is really not built to encourage new, different, even relevant programming. Sadly, the rule of the day seems to be if you have the money, you can get it on the air. It doesn’t matter if the message is bad or if the editing is bad. The lighting, audio, even clothing (or hair!!) can be bad—but if you have the money, you can get it on the air. Of course people won’t watch it. But that doesn’t seem to be the point anymore. “I’m on XYZ Christian Network!” seems to be the Christian media equivalent of joining the country club.
We serve The Creative Force of the universe. As Christians you’d think we could begin to produce programming that sets the creative tone for the industry instead of relegating ourselves to either imitating what we see the world doing or producing programs that no one (not even Christians) will watch or take the time to listen to.
Back to Seth, “Why do 98% of us sit around while big companies [or networks!] with no interest in us legislate against our interests?”
