Have you ever walked away from a difficult conversation only to come up with the perfect words to say only several minutes after it's all over?
I've always admired those who seem to be able to come up with just the right word at just the right time. Actually, I think it's a gift. It is indeed a gift to be valued.
In fact, Solomon, the writer of Proverbs put it this way, "The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry." (Proverbs 25:11 MSG)
As a leader, this is a critical gift to possess. Every day you are in situations with other people; situations that could turn out to the positive or the negative depending on the words you allow to come out of your mouth. Are you the kind who just lets it fly and suffers the consequences later? Or are you the opposite? Do you keep your teeth clinched, not saying a word? Both extremes are wrong.
There are so many situations in the Bible where a conversation with Jesus seemed to be going one way and you just know what he's going to say. Then he flips it and comes up with a much different response and he completely changes the game.
Words are powerful tools. But they can also be weapons. James had some good advice, "Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue." Be committed today to slow down and think before you speak. But then, when it's time, speak up! Mean what you say and say what you mean. Make the choice not to tear down with your words. You're a leader. Your words should lead, build, heal, instruct, guide, and help.
