Growing up in Oklahoma, I only got to go snow skiing once a year for a few days…and that’s if I was lucky. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be able to ski every day of the season. I envied those folks who lived in places like Breckenridge, Jackson Hole, Squaw Valley and Taos.
As cool as it would be to live at a ski resort, what I really wanted was to actually be a member of the Ski Patrol. These guys and girls were larger than life. They could ski any terrain pulling a toboggan, face any danger, rescue anyone, anywhere…and they got to wear those cool red jackets. Man…I would’ve given my right arm for one of those jackets with the big white cross on the back.
I saw a short video the other day that featured some Ski Patrol guys and girls. One quote from the video was when one of the girls told one of the non-Patrol guys…”If you want to be Ski Patrol you’ve got to set your alarm and get up early!”
It made me think…it’s one thing to want to be in leadership or want to be in charge or want to be wealthy. But it’s another to accept the new challenges that come with that new level. We may want to be the boss but are we prepared for the new level of commitment that comes with that new position? We may want to catch the big fish but are we prepared to get up early and get out there and get the line in the water?
If you want to be a leader, you’ll have be prepared to accept the increased responsibility that comes with that post. Are your shoulders ready for that extra weight of responsibility?
If you want to lead, you better set your alarm and get up early.
