The Lord of the Rings trilogy is full of great scenes and great themes but I think this simple exchange between Sam and Frodo is my favorite of all three movies. Watch in here.
The concept of finding the line between the known and the unknown and willingly crossing that line has always been intriguing to me. I think it's the line that separates the pioneers from the settlers. Not that one is right and one is wrong. The only wrong thing is when a pioneer is made to live like a settler or the other way around.
I've always wondered what was over the next hill or around the next bend in the river. For a guy who spent the first 20 years of my career in one place it's curious to realize this about myself. But of course pioneering isn't about physically moving from place to place. It's about exploring new things, new ways of doing things, meeting new people and solving new challenges no matter where you might be.
Our current adventure has taken us from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Monument, Colorado and now to upstate New York; a place we've never been, meeting people we've never known. I love it. For me, at this time of my life, it's invigorating.
I encourage you to find that line…the one between the known and the unknown, and cross it. Take that step. Remember what Bilbo used to say, "It's a dangerous business Frodo; going out your door. You step onto the road and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
Where will you be swept off to today?
Thanks Pastor Mike… that’s really good stuff.
