I realized this morning in a prayer meeting that true understanding is really all about two things; perspective and submission. How so you ask?
Well, let me tell you what I think. I think that we lack understanding because we lack perspective. We stand at the crossroads of a decision and waffle. We consider our options. We look back and know we don’t want to go that way. So we look forward; to the right and to the left. We can see but only to the horizon. If we could just get more perspective…the decision would be so much easier.
At that moment a hot-air balloon comes from nowhere and we crawl in. As the balloon slowly rises we can see where the two divergent roads are leading. We see that one is a dead end and the other leads us exactly where we want to go. Of course…we knew that to take the road on the right would be the correct decision. The balloon returns to earth, we make our decision and continue on our journey. A successful decision made…all because of a little understanding or perspective.
The other ingredient I think is submission. This one is a bit trickier. Maybe a better word would be humility. If we can’t receive understanding from those around us that God has put in our lives…if we can’t humble ourselves to admit that maybe we don’t know everything and we can learn from others we’ll never have the understanding we need to make wise decisions.
Solomon said it like this, "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." Proverbs 4:7
