Think of the latest greatest camp brochure you've seen. How about the latest camp promo video. Chances are these marketing tools are primarily targeted to the kids. And, don't get me wrong, that's great. But how many camps are sending the exact wrong message to parents?
The brochures and the videos that are targeted to kids rightly portray camp as a place where there will be so much fun they'll hardly be able to stand it. Activities from dawn til late night. Higher, faster, longer, better than anything they've ever done before.
But in a day when money is tight, parents (who have never sent their kids to camp before) might think that spending that much money just for a good time isn't the best way to spend on a tight budget. If "fun" is all camp is, why are we so dedicated to it?
The answer, of course, is that camp is so much more than just having a fun time. Camp is more than the zipline or the water skiing or the horseback riding. We all know that camp is a place where a life is changed…put on a different course. But are we doing a good job of communicating this fact?
Although I have seen a few, there aren't too many camps that are creating promo videos for mom. Videos showing the life changing effects of a week of camp. Videos that touch mom because they show the nurturing and bonding and deep affirmation that happen in a kid's life.
I love this short 30-second spot. It's NFL's Play 60. Their campaign to encourage kids to play for at least 60 minutes every single day. Watch this video and let it inspire you to make a great video promoting camp to mom.
Watch the boy's face. Pure delight. I have no idea how many takes this took to get this shot, but it's so pure, so authentic. And here's the deal…there are kids with faces like this every day all day at camp. Kids with silly grins on their faces because things are just so right, so perfect. They are happy. They are loved. Their bellies are full. Their minds are expanding. Their memory banks are filling.
Nothing will touch the heart of a mom like a child with this expression on his face. Camp can certainly get you that face. Can you get it on video?
Great example of what I’m talking about from Camp CedarCliff. Way to go guys! Watch it here: http://www.campcedarcliff.org/
