What’s the best way to handle change?

What’s the best way to handle change?

Do you ever feel like the poor boxer on the left in this photo? Every day is like a day in the ring. And life is just a series of unexpected punches; about all you can do is get your hands up to try defend yourself; the changes are just coming in too quickly to adapt.

I was at lunch the other day with some friends when one of those friends, Ken Ardrey, said almost under his breath…

“The best way to handle change is to cause it!”

Of course we all laughed because it seemed so…funny; even obvious. But the reality of that statement grabbed me then and is still hanging on today. If you’re in the boxing ring and getting punched in the face; the best way to defend yourself is to punch back! Get your arms up take some big steps forward and go at your opponent!

Life is the same way. Every day you are either playing defense or offense. You are either spending your day simply responding to the things that are happening to you or you are the one causing things to happen.

What are your days like? Do you feel like you’re getting punched in the gut day after day? The changes and circumstances coming in too quickly to avoid and it seems like all you can do is put your arms up and try to defend yourself?

Or…

Are you making the big plans and taking the bold steps to make those plans happen? Are you punching back?

I’ve always felt that change, real and lasting change doesn’t happen in small incremental ways. Real change happens in big, bold moves.

If you want to get on the offense and start punching instead of taking punches you are going to have to move boldly. That means more than just changing the route you drive to work. Chances are, you know the decisions you need to make…you’re just waiting for the courage to make them!

So here it is…your kick in the pants…

Take the bold steps today to get on the offense. Like Ken says, “the best way to handle change is to cause it!”

It’s time for you to cause change.
