I love trees. I love the shade, the bark on the trunk, the sound of the wind in the leaves or pine boughs, the imagery. And I love the symbolism; what trees can teach us. There are so many lessons to be learned from the roots to the fruit to the leaves, the branches, the trunk…it all makes sense on a spiritual level as well as on the physical level.
Without diving in too deep to all this I just want to focus on this one point that the trees remind me of every day.
I am not alone. I am tied in to a community. This community allows me to receive nourishment and sunlight and protection; way more than I could ever receive if I was on my own. And when I’m part of this tree (community) I’m a part of something larger than myself. And that’s pretty cool.
What about you? When you are a part of a community whether it’s a family or a neighborhood or a home group or a church you are a part of something bigger than just you. Certainly, there are benefits that come with this belonging. But there are also responsibilities.
To be part of something else is to care about that other thing. It’s to be committed to the welfare of that thing. That’s what being tied together is all about. You get out of your relationships what you are willing to put into them.
Jesus said it like this, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.”
When you’re tied to the trunk…all things are possible.
