The Blue Man Group

Mike_with_blue_manLast night I saw a performance of The Blue Man group. It was
probably one of the most creative things I’ve ever seen. Without a word being spoken,
they thoroughly entertained an audience of 1000 people for almost an hour and a
half.

We humans really do carry the seed of creativity from our
Maker. Whether saved or unsaved; I believe that we were born to create. We were
born to make things interesting, funny, beautiful, different, special. I
believe that’s in our DNA.

I couldn’t help but think about the industry I work in. Why
can’t we see more creativity in the Christian television industry? Why aren’t
we creating interesting things, funny things, beautiful, different or special
things on Christian television?

Last night I saw three guys with weird blue face paint and
lights and sound impact an audience. They didn’t say a word. They didn’t have
elaborate sets or costumes but they communicated in a powerful way.

Why makes us think an audience will continue to listen when we
just put a guy behind a pulpit and have him start talking (or yelling)? Then
when we decide to use our innate sense of creativity all we can seem to think
of is to add ferns to the stage or shine colored lights on white pillars?
Please.

I’ve said this before but it bears saying again; we serve
the most creative Force in the universe. We were born with the seed of His
magnificent creativity inside us. We have got to do more than what we are
doing. We were created for more than what we have allowed ourselves to become.

I’m newly encouraged to not settle for just doing Christian
television the way it’s always been done or to simply find something the world
seems to be doing successfully and make “the Christian version.” I’m committed
to being part of the answer instead of just perpetuating the problem.
So there.

  • Perhaps I could address that we should be committing the best of everything in Christian media, from analog to HDTV. Let us infiltrate the world and BECOME television, not just “Christian television.” I know that we are no longer in need of new material for the age 65 and above demographic, but even then, the same thing is being done over and over to reach young adults.. Picture this: A group of trendily dressed teenagers gathers in a coffee shop discussing peer pressure. I’ve seen it countless times. The Love-A-Child and the Feed the Children programs have it right- they hide no blemish and let reality speak for itself. Could we somehow become a little more real, yet abstract enough to have depth? Must we continue to declare, “If you want what you’ve never had, you must do what you’ve never done,” phrase without noticing that it might apply to our field?
