His Presence Changes Everything

I had one of those
moments yesterday at church. You know the moments I’m talking about. You’re
just sitting there minding your own business…sitting up straight, setting a
good example for your kids who are drawing fierce battle scenes on the back of
the bulletin when all of a sudden the light bulb goes on and you understand
something that used to be a mystery to you. I was listening to several other
members of the church who had approached the microphone to talk about where
they were in their journey with the Lord.

I guess I need to
explain at this point that I go to a fairly unconventional church. “Open
Microphone” is not a once-in-a-while occurrence. It’s every Sunday. Someone
will share. Then others are free to come up and tell the rest of us how that
message impacted them (or not). It can get pretty interesting…even scary at
times.

Yesterday there was
a theme that emerged out of the testimonies of four or five of my brothers and
sisters. The theme of raw vulnerability, helplessness, and learning to yield to
an unseen sovereign God began to seep into my spirit as I sat there listening.
It was at that rare moment that I gained a bit of clarity about my relationship
with God; His part…my part.

It occurred to me as
I listened that ours is a journey steeped in covenant. “The Lord is my
Shepherd,” “He is my rock and my fortress,” “The name of the Lord is a strong
tower,” “He is the Glory and the lifter of my head,” “I am the righteousness of
God in Christ,” “The God of my salvation” are all statements declaring and
describing our relationship with our heavenly Father.

  • I love those moments. They always make me aware of how involved in our lives God really is. He doesn’t simply sit apart from humanity watching in dismay and formulating some plan to get us to go the right way. He is among us, in us, and will interact with us on a very personal and involved level. Thanks for sharing!
