What’s your year end balance?

The painting here by Rembrandt depicts God's handwriting on the wall of the Belshazzar's banquet hall. The book of Daniel tells us that three words were written on the wall by the hand of God; MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. Of those three words, the second is the one that's always seemed so haunting to me.

The literal meaning is "a shekel from the verb 'to weigh.'"

But Daniel's interpretation is a lot more revealing. He told the king that the word TEKEL meant "You have been weighed on the scales and found deficient."

Pretty humbling indeed. So, what's your year end balance? It's not a bad exercise to think about how it'd come out if your 2010 was "weighed on the scales." Would you be found deficient or have you added to your life and to those around you? And what would this exercise do to change the way you view and plan the year to come?

I'll bet you can find some time in the next couple of days to make a list of the ways 2011 can be the kind of year that ends up positive on the scales next December 30.
